Author’s Note

This rough attempt at an essay was written thirty years ago, and later combined with some observations entitled “With a Light Rein.” I am dedicating it to my son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose paternal line represents 150-odd continuous years of life as cowboys and cowgirls on the cattle ranges of Texas.
