Tom Moorhouse

2002

It's been said Texas cowboy, Tom Moorhouse, isn't just good at his work, he's the best.

At age 56, Tom Moorhouse is the youngest cowman to receive the Foy Proctor Award. However, being the youngest definitely does not make him the least deserving.

“It’s been said Texas cowboy, Tom Moorhouse, isn’t just good at his work, he’s the best,” said Steagall. “Tom has consistently demonstrated his abilities of handling horses and cattle at various ranch rodeos. He was named All Around Cowboy on two different occasions at the Texas Ranch Roundup in Wichita Falls. The horses he has trained and ridden have received numerous top horse awards as well.”

Moorhouse, along with brothers Ed, John, Bob and their mother, Lucille, owns the Moorhouse Cattle Company in eastern King County.

“Togo (Tom’s father) taught them how to be good cowboys and how to handle cattle, but at the same time they’re progressing,” Steagall commented. “They do things that are conducive to today’s market and today’s lifestyle. they lease and operate several cow, calf and stocker operations scattered around West and Central Texas.

“He’s completely satisfied and contented by the cowboy life,” continued Steagall. “He says, ‘I don’t regret anything I’ve ever done. It’s not belittling to me to say that I’ve done a lot of everything and, as far as that goes, I still do.”‘

Moorhouse, a man of few words, said he was honored to accept the award, but wasn’t sure he was fit for it.

“Well, it’s mighty nice to receive this award,” Moorhouse said. “And, I look at some of the folks that are sitting alongside with me up here – and some of the folks that’s already got it and I don’t know if I’m really capable of holding the cuts for ’em. But I sure do appreciate you giving it to me.”
